Pipe bursting

Pipe bursting is a process that is easier to understand when viewed, rather than described, so here's a short video of the process.

A well-established method for trenchless replacement of worn out and undersized gas, water and sewer pipes, pipe bursting happens when an existing pipe is fractured from the inside as a slightly-larger pipe is drawn into it as its replacement.

The most common type of pipe bursting involves inserting a cone-shaped tool (called a bursting head) into an old pipe.  The head fractures the old pipe. Simultaneously, the new pipe is pushed or pulled in behind the bursting head.
Typically, pipe bursting is carried out in 300 to 400-foot lengths (the usual distance between sewer manholes). Pipes suitable for bursting include clay, cast iron, unreinforced concrete, asbestos, and some plastics.

Reinforced concrete pipe is also suitable if it isn't heavily reinforced or if it has deteriorated significantly.
Pipe bursting is just one option among several when considering trenchless sewer repair.

Just be sure to hire a seasoned pro with extensive experience. Licensed, bonded and insured, Steve Pielak is keenly aware of pros and cons of pipe bursting, pipe lining and other trenchless options.

Before you decide to do anything, give Steve a jingle. He's the man the City of Tacoma calls on and the man that two generations of Tacoma citizens have relied on to serve them in their  times of need.
